A Journey Of Passion & Music
Becoming A Maestra
Ever since I was a child, I was always interested in music. However, being a female musician in the Middle East is very challenging, since the majority of the people here frown upon it, whether it is from a cultural perspective or a religious one.
Although I have started my musical journey around 2009 by singing in the National Music Conservatory, only in 2012 i’ve decided to follow my passion and took a leap of faith as I switched majors from business administration to music composition and conducting at the University of Jordan, to be the only female to choose study this major and despite its being a challenging one and an untraditional choice. Upon graduation in 2017, she became the First Female Orchestra Conductor with a university degree in this major in Jordan and one of only a handful of ”MAESTRA’S" in the Arab world.
Through out this journey I have dealt with many skeptic people & discouraging circumstances, where I had to prove my self every single day, break stereo types, challenge traditions, and on top of all represent every Arab girl with big dreams and huge ambitions.
I consider music as a universal language to spread ideas and emotions and my passion was strong enough that I started to compose music with such determination to take it up on both an academic and a professional level.
I’ve realized that playing, singing, and composing music has the power to spread ideas and emotions and has the ability to connect and influence cultures and societies.
“As a conductor I believe that having leadership characteristic is crucial to be successful and to be able to conduct the orchestra musicians in a way to bring the best out of them and to transfer the emotion to them and see it in the music.”

SYMPHONY- الثائرة (THE REBEL)
Altha'era (the rebel) symphony the first piece Yara composed and conducted, to be the first Jordanian female to compose and conduct an orchestra in Jordan
Yara chose to compose a symphony based on a play written by her Grandfather, Abdelrahim Omar A Jordanian Poet and Writer. Yara choose the same play name for her symphony “Altha’era” (“The Rebel”) to show that the younger generation can rebel against old thinking.
The play symbolisms portrays the Palestinian struggle in a humane perspective, “Altha’era” tells the story of a young girl being taken from her parents. Throughout the symphony, Yara translated the emotions and the struggle into music, as the build up of the symphony is based on the original story line.
Yara used folklore motives to create the fusion between the middle eastern Arabic culture and the international classical music.

“I want to tell stories through my music, to express my self, reflect my identity and connect with people, and this is why I choose (The Rebel) Play to be my first story to tell through my symphonic composition.
Showing that the younger generation can rebel against stereotypes, confront struggles, and to follow their passion,
Proving that a woman can lead !”

“Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.”
